DR RAPHAEL L. GREENFIELD D.D.S., M.Sc.
Warsaw, Poland - 18 & 19 October 2019
Subject: Coordinated Arch Development
DR RAPHAEL L. GREENFIELD D.D.S., M.Sc.
Education:
Dr. Greenfield graduated with honors from Howard University College of Dentistry in 1971. After receiving his Master of Science in Orthodontics from Boston University in 1973, he continued as a Clinical Instructor until 1976. Dr. Greenfield became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1984 and was invited to exhibit his board cases at the A.A.O. meeting that same year.
Presentations and Publications:
Dr. Greenfield has lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally on his 98.5% nonextraction treatment philosophy entitled; “Coordinated Arch Development®.” He was also invited to present his philosophy at the 1996, 2003, 2004 and 2005 scientific sessions of the American Association of Orthodontics.
Dr. Greenfield was asked to defend his nonextraction approach at the 1992 and 2002 College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics annual sessions, the 1993 Southern Association of Orthodontists’ annual session, the 1998 Northeastern Society of Orthodontists’ annual meeting, the 1999 American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry annual session and the 2001 Japanese Orthodontic Society Annual session.
His article in the August 1993 Journal of Clinical Orthodontics on “Simultaneous Torquing and Intrusion” aroused great interest in his methods of intruding and retracting maxillary incisors. March 1995, and September 2005 articles in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, (JCO) described his unique “Fixed Piston Appliance” to distalize molars and develop space for tooth alignment and profile reduction in noncompliant patients. An article on mandibular arch development was recently published in the Februaury 2011 JCO.
In 1999, Dr. Greenfield authored the first textbook on nonextraction treatment entitled, “Nonextraction Orthodontics; the History, Philosophy and Clinical Application.” The textbook was published in three different languages. A more extensive and updated 2nd edition was published in 2010. It contains nearly 1,100 pages, 7,000 images and ilustrations, and a library of 58 nonextraction cases with flowcharts.
Professional Memberships:
In addition to serving as a referee for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Dr. Greenfield is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Southern Association of Orthodontists and the South Florida Academy of Orthodontists.
Practitioner and Inventor:
Dr. Greenfield is the originator of five scientific patents. He has successfully treated more than 10,000 nonextraction patients in a 30 year career. His “Coordinated Arch Development®” technique and philosophy creates radiant smiles and greatly enhances long term functional, esthetic and orthodontic stability.

Q & A
Course Description
Achieving long term stability requires controlled upper and lower 1st molar movements, simultaneously, in all three planes. Light, continuous forces of similar magnitude are utilized to “coordinate” these movements. The final orientation of the molars creates occlusal forces through the long axes with the absence of deflective contacts during function. The molars are placed well within cancellous bone and the “neutral zone” to enhance their compatibility with the periodontium and soft tissue envelope. The resultant position of the anterior segment provides proper incisal guidance and maximizes facial and dental esthetics.
Dr. Greenfield will present the “Coordinated Arch Development®” Philosophy and Technique based on his 30 years of experience applying it to children and adults, along with his extensive research and exposure to 100’s of Dr. Norman Cetlin’s successfully treated nonextraction cases more than 25 years out of retention.
